Passage of Time

She paused in the doorway, looking over her shoulder at him. Her eyes swept up to meet his, then lowered, triggering the small smile that raised the corner of her mouth. His heart raced like he had run a marathon in the few steps they had taken down the hall. His palm still felt the cool softness of her skin where her hand had been curved into his seconds before. The world shrank down to the size of a pinhole, giving him only a view of her before him. The scent of her perfume lingering where she had been filled his nostrils, and he struggled to stand upright.

How long had he wanted to be right here, about to slip into the bedroom beyond, to take her into his arms and show her how he felt about her? He suddenly couldn’t recall whether it had been mere moments or a month ago that they had met. It shouldn’t matter, he knew, and he tried to breathe slowly, but found himself unable to manage it. Emerald flashed as her eyes raised again to his. She was emeralds and sapphires and diamonds tonight, and more precious than all of those things.

“Ready?” she asked softly.

The Last One

He watched her, seated atop the rock. Sometimes she moved a great deal, and others she was utterly still. He worried when she was still for so long, and he often thought of approaching her, to see if he might move her and know that she was still within, still breathing, still alive.

She had been so still this time that he was unsure she was even blinking. He was worried, uncertain what to do. He watched closely, hovering nearby, willing her pale eyes to close and open again. It scared him that this incredible being might depart his sight. He had protected her, defended her, guided and listened to her. How long had he remained a mere breath away?

Finally he moved close enough to caress her cheek. Her eyes fluttered and she touched her long, delicate fingers to her skin where he had been. He breathed a sigh of relief and it made strands of her pale hair rustle and settle into new places along her slender neck. He delighted in seeing the effect, of having changed her that little bit.

“Why are you so still?” he breathed some time later, having finally summoned the courage to give voice to his question.

“Because I am the last,” she answered, raising her head. A tear slipped from her eye. He touched it, turning it to ice, and let it fall into her lap.

He stirred her hair gently again as he nodded. He couldn’t believe he was actually talking to her. He had not braved talking to someone in so long, he worried his voice might break or that his words wouldn’t come out at all. But she was talking back, and that delighted him.

“I am alone,” she whispered, lowering her head and holding the solid, glittery form of her tear. Another joined it then, sliding down her porcelain  cheek. He caught this one too, icing it with little more than a thought, nudging it into her palm.

“You’re not alone,” he whispered. “I’ve always been with you.” This time he wrapped her in his embrace, giving her his warmth, feeding her body with his heat, swirling around her. He kissed her neck, and she sighed softly and closed her eyes. He kissed her eyelids and she offered her lips, raising her chin. He kissed her there, too, tenderly touching her skin.

Wind settled then, and watched her once more.

Indigo Heart

I first saw her at Palindrome, the skating rink on the east side of town. Her hair was blowing behind as she sped around the skating rink. She looked sleek, powerful, a little bit dangerous, and a whole lot of gorgeous. I held my breath as I watched from the balcony while she wove through the crowd on the rink. She gave a few head nods as she passed people who seemed to know her, but she never acknowledged anyone first. Everything about her said that she was beholden only to herself, completely free from all the little social cues and conventions that stifled others. I’m sure I painted a lot of that onto her personality as she whizzed past, but I’d make adjustments when I met her, and that became my sole purpose for my evening.

I wove my way through the crowds on the ramp down from the balcony, skidding around the corners and holding onto the rails, my bag hitting my hip as I slid down the last bit of the descent and onto the main floor. I hoped she was still on the rink as I wobbled my way across the carpet, which had been worn smooth by thousands of skates trying to cross this very route. Music thrummed in my ears, the beat making it feel like my pulse was matching the bass tones.

I waited about ten minutes, and then she swung wide on the rink. I moved just enough to one side and she crashed right into me. I went down beneath her, the breath knocked out of me with a whoosh. She was pressed against the full length of me, making my head spin a little bit. Her eyes were even more amazing up close. Then she was up, rising gracefully and offering her hand to pull me up.

“I’m sorry,” she said quietly. I took her hand and she hauled me to my feet.

“Totally my fault,” I said shyly, wanting desperately to look into her eyes again, but getting distracted somewhere around her lips and the glossy red shine on them that was reflecting a thousand lights from the disco balls hanging around the room. “I’m Lindsey,” I said, finally looking into her eyes.

“Indigo Heart,” she said, smiling slightly. I wondered if this was the smile of indulgence she gave to people who couldn’t resist staring at her… like I was. “Nice to meet you. Sorry again.”

Just like that, Indigo Heart faded into the crowd.

I’d find her again, I thought. And I did.

Red Shoe Diary

I don’t know how long I had been waiting. I had followed the trail of red rose petals left from the entry, up the stairwell and into the sitting area. Usually there was a lot more furniture in here than there was tonight, but I stood at the window gazing out over the rooftops and watching the moon float by in the cloudless sky, the stars twinkling in the distance.

“Don’t move,” he said softly, closing the door. He did something in the space, and then I heard the soft rustle of the leather as he sat down in the chair behind me. I stood still at the window, seeing outlines of the room behind me reflected in the glass. My heartbeat had quickened since he arrived, I realized, and I was uncertain whether it was my own body’s reaction, or if the room had become markedly warmer. “It’s a lovely dress, Isabella,” he said a moment later. “Take it off.”

I gulped, and my hands began to tremble as I reached back with both arms to hold the fabric and pull the zipper, first at the top, then at the middle of my back, drawing the warm fabric forward and slipping my arms out, then shifting slightly and wiggling to get the tight-fitting satin down off my hips. We were on a high enough floor that there were very few windows visible to see me here, and the light behind me was faint, lit only by candles, but it was intimidating to be standing in front of the tall glass wearing only lingerie.

“Now the bra,” he said, his voice huskier this time. His tone was expectant, but not demanding. He knew me well enough to know that it might take me a moment, but I would oblige him. He made the spaces safe; he filled his requests with eroticism and indulged his desires for visual beauty.

I removed the expensive bit of lace and fabric and let it fall to the floor, letting my hands fall to the side rather than covering myself as I was inclined to do.

“Panties, too,” he purred. I lowered them, realizing as I did it how warm they had become. I stood upright again, stretching my palms to try to ease my own tension.

“Come sit,” he said finally, when I was feeling the cool of the glass making my nipples rise. The candles now ringed the empty chair, while his own seat was hidden in darkness, the lights barely casting a glow far enough to make out hints of his body as he sat.

I sat gingerly, the polished leather cool against my bare bottom, which quickly heated the chair to match my own temperature. He rose, prowling along the candle’s perimeter, then moving behind me, blindfolding me with soft satin I imagined was red, like I was wearing. And then he touched me, stroking my skin, easing my limbs into shapes as he wanted them, posing me. I arched my back over the arm of the chair as he held my breasts in his warm hands and eased me backward. He rubbed along my thighs, brushing the insides of them with gentle touches, lifting my legs and placing them just so. His warm fingertips pressed between my legs for just a moment, and I imagined he was confirming his own suspicions about how his touches were affecting me.

“Hold very still now,” he said. The click of his camera once, twice, three times and another. I held back a shiver. The photography didn’t bother me, he did that for a living. I wondered, tried to picture what I looked like before him. He moved close, kissing me hard, squeezing my thigh in his hand. “Good, now we’re ready to begin,” he whispered against my lips.

Alpha

Faelen tucked her hands into the soft fur muff and turned toward her little home. Behind her, the pack of wolves watched her departure with sorrowful eyes. The largest of the pack stood out before the others and Faelen looked down to him. Majestic and dark, his citrine eyes told her everything. The howl that slipped from his mouth was a sad, mournful wail, echoing through the stillness of the trees. The sound lingered even when he stopped, and the other wolves rustled and whimpered behind him.

“Oh, my love,” she said, her breath frosting in the winter’s cold. She had long ago surrendered her tears to the warmth of his fur as she wrapped her arms around him and cried. He had rested his head on her shoulder and growled softly. Faelen bent to stroke his head, and he whined and sat on his haunches.

She lingered a moment more, then turned and soundlessly left them. The witch’s curse had made her the very being who hunted his food sources and decimated his home with axes and saws. This human skin had rested upon her for so long she worried that she would never escape it; that she could never return to her Thorolf’s side as his beloved alpha mate.

The forest gave way to the little village as she walked, her hands warm in the fur that had once been her own.

Directions

Madigan’s heart raced. There was no avoiding, no place to go. She moved to one side of the corridor, turning her back to the wall and standing still as Madame Aleski approached from the other direction. The Madame was moving quickly through the passage, her long, sure strides unwavering. Mr. Takaneo strode nearly soundless in her wake, nodding his acknowledgement of her statements, the only sound that of his wooden sandals on the metal grates of the floor.

“Governor Landon will be seated with the Klawsons,” the Madame said, barely turning her head, “and the Farrington delegation will…” her voice trailed off and she looked directly at Madigan, who felt that her lungs might burst suddenly from having held her breath for too long. “Cadet Williams,” she said, nodding slightly as she swept past. Her train of thought uninterrupted, she continued speaking to Mr. Takaneo, her personal drone hovering over her right shoulder, keeping pace and whirring softly.

“Madame,” Madigan managed, staying still a moment longer before she rushed down the hallway, anxious to breathe again, looking back for a last glimpse.

In the next bay, Madi leaned against the cold metal wall, closing her eyes and mentally painting everything onto a canvas in her brain. She had never seen Madame Aleski at close range before, and the thought that she had just had an encounter with the woman was enough to make her knees nearly buckle. The Madame was head of the entire Galactic Intelligence Community, responsible for the activities of tens of thousands of personnel, the security of countless diplomats and private citizens.

There were rumors she had an eidetic memory, able to recall everything she saw, heard, or read. Other rumors said that her memory was artificially enhanced, stored, backed up and cataloged by some system of software. Her pale skin was the result of never leaving the underground network of tunnels and transport, they said. Her white hair was the result of the close calls she had avoided, and that in her youth her hair black as a raven’s wing. They also said that she was over 90 years old, but as Madi had looked at her face, she couldn’t recall seeing a crow’s foot or even a wrinkle. The Madame’s legendary Caribbean blue eyes had been clear, bright and alert. Even her voice, authoritative and direct without being stern, was softer than imagined, as though she need not raise it to garner attention or get results. Her uniform was singular among the GIC; she wore a wool jacket (where had they even found a sheep?) with a tall belt around her waist, her unwrinkled skirt and heels Madi couldn’t imagine could be run in. Perhaps she had no reason to ever run. The gold brooch which marked her rank, with its black and white stones — “through the darkness and into light” like the agency motto — had been pinned to her lapel.

Mr. Takaneo was just as much an enigma. No one knew where he had come from. His pointed elven ears should have placed him among the Starburst city’s dwellers, but no one had been able to link him to that city. The rumors about him were just as outlandish. First, that he was the Madame’s consort, which, having seen him just now, made Madi think the Madame had impeccable taste in men. No one had ever heard him speak. He wore his own uniform of a bygone era, one bare, pale shoulder visible always. Madi remembered seeing the scar that arced across his left shoulder blade, said to be the claw mark of a Wildern he had fought and killed with a single blade.

Whatever their story was, the Madame and Mr. Takaneo were legends, and as Madi finally pushed herself off the wall, she realized that the Madame had called her by name. She wondered if it were possible she knew the names of all 812 cadets in the academy. Her thoughts reeling, Madi headed back to her room, sure that her best friend Thompson was going to love hearing this story.

Bait & Switch

Dean thanked the assistant who had guided him through the labyrinth of cords and wires to the chair he sat in now. Half a dozen people were on the set, moving things, testing other things, using a language of their own to say that this was ready, and that was next to be done.

Charlotte wasn’t visible, but he had heard her laugh somewhere in the darkness that surrounded the one area that was well lit. He’d spent his time admiring the motorcycle on set, even though he had never ridden one. It looked like a powerful beast, and he appreciated that.

When she had told him she was a model, he hadn’t quite believed her. She wasn’t the lying type, and she was really attractive, but he remembered staring at her and the words not registering, and then he’d composed himself and said something he hoped was neutral. Seven months down the line, and she finally invited him to actually come to the set. In the meantime, she didn’t talk about her work, and he didn’t really ask. Seeing all these people today, and seeing that they were professionals and not holed up in some little warehouse shooting soft core porn made the whole scenario a bit more real to him.

So far, everyone had come and introduced themselves, shaken his hand in greeting, and smiled. They were all very attractive people, too, and if he had thought his way along a bit more, he might have been intimidated. But he was here at her invitation, and that apparently opened more than a few doors.

John, the British-accented photographer, called out, “Shooting set 3!” The noise level dropped around them, and Dean settled back into the canvas chair. A big, industrial fan started, John took his place behind the camera.

And then a tall, leggy redhead stepped into the lights, sitting gingerly on the bike, leaning forward to get her foot on the peg and steadying herself with her other foot on the floor. She reached out for the handlebar and raised her head. Dean froze, his mouth hanging open. The moment she looked up, he actually recognized her. THIS was Charlotte. And she was stunning. The fan caught her hair, blowing the long, straight strands away from her face. She looked toward John as he barked some movements she should make, and her eyes were the most intense green he had ever seen.

Flashbulbs popped and Dean shied back a bit at the bright glare. His eyes still weren’t able to reconcile the woman he knew with this person he was seeing. All the features were there, of course, but makeup, clothing, a different hairstyle, all made her into this person he barely recognized. It was remarkable, he thought.

A short time later, she came off the photo set, and put her hands on the arms of his chair just as the lights in the building came up. At close range, he could see exactly what sort of magic had happened to transform her from the Charlotte he knew, into model Charlotte. He kissed her nose, and decided that he really liked his Charlotte better.
